Another problem with “follow your passion” is that it assumes you will have a single passion in your life. There will be that one thing.
Now, perhaps if you’re very successful like Steve Jobs, you will get sucked into sticking with one thing, because it’s too hard to give it up. And similarly, perhaps if you have few options in your society, economically, you will be forced to stick with one thing. Your professional skillset, for instance, makes switching to another career involve a pay cut, so is hard to do.
But I think for many people, myself included, this is forced only by circumstance, and the natural predilection is to try many things. Why can’t a life have variety? Why should it be a monoculture of activity?
